These bread machine Spelt Flaxseed Breadsticks are speckled with a super healthy ingredient. Flaxseeds offer a long list of benefits for women.
Hormone Balancing Superfood: flaxseed
There are 2 kinds of flaxseed you’ll find on the grocery store shelf. Brown flaxseed is more common but there are also golden flaxseeds. However, both varieties are high in fiber and are a great source of alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is a plant omega-3 fatty acid.
These little seeds are also high in phytoetrogens called lignans. Lignans are found in plant foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. But flaxseeds are so much higher in lignans which act like estrogen in the body. Estrogen’s health protective benefits decrease as we produce less of it in perimenopause and menopause.
Are flaxseeds good for you?
Flaxseeds may have a protective effect against breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Eating flaxseeds may reduce your risk for osteoporosis.
Some women may experience less hot flashes as a result of including flaxseed in their diet.
Flaxseeds can protect against heart disease is the leading cause of death among menopausal women.
How to use flaxseeds
First, I grind my flaxseeds from whole seeds. The nutrients are more bioavailable to your body this way. I try to buy from a store that stocks fresh flaxseeds. The oil in seeds can turn rancid if exposed to heat or held too long. A spice grinder or coffee grinder is perfect for making small batches of freshly ground seeds.
You can sprinkle ground flaxseeds on yogurt, oatmeal, or salads. They blend well into smoothies or the batter of baked goods. There is a half cup mixed into my Spelt Flaxseed Breadsticks!
Bread Machine Breadsticks
Use a bread machine to get these on the dinner table without too much hands on time. Another fun idea for using this dough – shape them into rolls instead of breadsticks. After they come out of the oven you can brush the tops with garlic and melted buttery spread or brush with egg wash and sprinkle flaky Maldon Sea Salt, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds.
