Moxie Mixes – Sweet and Savory

Moxie, noun,  1. vigor; verve; pep.  2. courage and aggressiveness; nerve.

You’ve got moxie! I created 2 snack mixes to keep you energized but without the crash of unbalanced snack bars or mixes containing candy. I bet you’re like me. I don’t want to eat anything that’s going to slow me down, make my stomach ache, make my head foggy, or make me feel hungry again in an hour (when I shouldn’t be). I think of snack mixes as an extender to get me through my errands without succumbing to a drive-thru. It’s just a little nibble to keep my energy flowing between healthy meals or to help me recover from my morning workout or run.

I mix a big bowl together and then divvy out smaller snack-size portions into zip lock bags to toss in my purse or gym bag. I might even put one in the console of my car in case of emergency or, more likely, for one of my kids to steal as soon as they hop in the car.

sweet snack mix bowlI’m excited about 2 of the ingredients in the sweet mix. First, the dark chocolate covered ginger. Wow! The combination is warm and spicy. And dried mulberries, cute little things. I think they taste like delicious little balls of bubble gum. They contain antioxidants, vitamin C, and even resveratrol the same anti-aging ingredient in red wine.

Sweet Moxie Mix
Serves: 3 cups
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate-covered ginger
  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • ¼ cup dried mulberries
  • ¼ cup dried pomegranate seeds
  • ¼ cup dried raspberries
  • 1 cup raw walnuts
  • ¾ cup raw pistachios
  1. Mix all ingredients together.
  2. Store in an air tight container.
sweet snack mixThese are happy, colorful combinations of protein, good carbs, and healthy plant fats. Just the thing to keep your mind sharp and appetite settled. By creating home made snacks you can better ensure that the ingredients are fresh. Home made snacks are most often less expensive than store bought. Your blend will not contain added sugars or unhealthy oils and preservatives. Look out for dried fruits and vegetables processed with sulfites. You don’t want those. Some people are sensitive to this chemical and may experience a reaction without even realizing these otherwise healthy plant foods are the source.

You will see ingredients that you might want to swap out for the ones listed here. Go ahead and trade dark chocolate covered blueberries for the chocolate ginger or switch out the dried tomatoes for carrot chips. Personalize and create your signature Moxie Mix!


Savory Moxie Mix
Serves: 3¼ cups
  • ¼ cup dried tomatoes , chopped in bite size pieces
  • ⅓ cup dried green beans
  • ¼ cup dried peas
  • ⅓ cup plantain chips
  • ¼ cup edamame crackers
  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • ½ cup raw pumpkin seeds
  • ⅓ cup raw sunflower seeds
  1. Mix all ingredients together.
  2. Store in an air tight container.
